Fossil vertebra?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I found this bone on the beach (mediterranean sea), it's really heavy, really like a stone and not like a bone.

I suppose it could be a fossil vertebra of a big animal, it's similar to some cranial vertebrae (atlas) of cetaceans.

What do you think could be?

In the area of finding there are marine formations from pliocene to pleistocene.

Dimensions: 11x5x3 cm.

It is the fused Atlas +axis of a delphinoid dolphin. Probably modern.

Thanks for the replies.

If can help to determine if it's a fossil or not, I've take some microscope pictures: the texture seems like re-mineralized (calcite like), everywhere in the small cavities I can see crystals (I think calcite/aragonite).

It is possibile also for a recent bone?

Those are definitely crystals, so you got a fossil bone. :bone:
