MarcoX
Dear Forum I`m intersted to add an egg to my colletion and would like to get your opinion before i will buy it. Thanks. Specifications - Egg: 19cm x 10cm x 9cm weight 1800g
LordTrilobite
It looks mostly correct. But something about the colour on both the egg and matrix is a bit off. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that this is a replica cast of a real egg. 2 Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
MarcoX
Just saw the seller is following a "famous" Egg Seller from Malaysia on an Auction site. So I maybe better stay away from it.
Haravex
Stay away I have to go out right now but will explain later why.
FranzBernhard
I have no idea about the egg itself (willing to learn something!), but the matrix looks like mortar/concrete to me. Is such a mortar-like matrix typical for these eggs? Franz Bernhard
RJB
Wow! To me this egg looks as real as possible. No wonder I dont buy eggs! RB
SailingAlongToo
At least this one shown has texture and appearance of an egg shell, unlike most of the rocks that get posted here and other FB forums. 1 Don't know much about history Don't know much biology Don't know much about science books......... Seguidora-de-Isis
I hope this simple outline is useful for understanding the problem involved in this post. Choose now the Red Pill or the Blue Pill! Get rid of the Matrix! 6 Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question!
steelhead9
To me the egg looks real. The matrix color is certainly not typical, but the seam between the matrix and egg looks pretty darn good. The slight open crack in the closeup of this seam would indicate that it at least was not cast as a single item. I have occasionally seen Chinese eggs with non-typical matrix. So if it is a cast, it is very, very good and if it is real it is also very, very good! 2 Still Life Fossils

But at the same time, I'm trying to pass here how reliable the eggs from Malaysia can be. Most fakes are quite obvious, but some are made professionally, each year better, using silicone molds or fiberglass of real eggs, thus creating perfect and large-scale replicas. A market that moves thousands of dollars a year. Through auction sites and online fossil stores, I have seen that Malaysia currently has more "Dinosaur eggs" than China, France, Argentina and the United States together! 4 Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question! aeon.rocks
Fake! Cast of a real egg was made and shaped a little on the parts where shell was missing and then the cast was cemented in artificial sandstone matrix (some of which was removed in the end). Some dirt and sand was left or added on the cast to make it look more realistic. It's a good fake, but besides colors and matrix texture which are off, you can see there is something off in texture of the egg too in good close up detailed pictures (if you compare to details of real eggs). Cracks and details on real egg would look different. These are mass-produced, but in some cases C grade real eggs (eggs with a lot of missing shell) are heavily restored and placed in artificial matrix. Real egg-shell pieces could be used to fool the buyer, but if you have a look at the details, you can see signs where it has been man-shaped. Both left and right sides were shaped with resign, middle part of the egg could have some real egg-shell pieces or is a good cast. On a quick look it could almost fool even experienced collectors, but "unfortunately" manufacturers didn't have original reddish matrix (probably not made in China): Possibly here you could even see air-bubbles. And notice the lack of details (many real eggs have issues on sides - very often missing shell, here shell seems to be there, although no granulation - shows where cast was "restored"):

aeon.rocks
Quote So they seem to popup everywhere... So it seems, but don't forget about the forest, when you are looking at some trees. And although there are millions of real dinosaur eggs out there - don't forget it doesn't really matter which pill you took... Unless you are from China, these are all illegal goods, or so the gov says; perhaps time for another pill... There are only 2 problems why we often see fakes for sale on our favourite auction site: greed & fossil "protection" laws. Country of origin almost makes no difference in legal terms, similar legislation everywhere, but majority of real dinosaur eggs in the market originates from China and Mongolia, both countries in which these are "protected". In Chinese mineral and fossil shows you could buy these by the dozen at prices starting around 100$ per egg, almost legally. So if you live in China you could have these for breakfast, but it's illegal to export. Tom K., thanks for the pics:

Haravex
Ok echoing what others have said firstly the egg has no cracks in the shell, that's an immediate alarm bell even more modern fossil eggs in perfect condition have some form of cracking now from a distance it could almost look like it has some but no there is no separate pieces of shell just continues. Second issue why is there mud on the top of the egg? Yeah they can be found in this type of matrix but it's missing something very important... the calcite layer this is what you see after you remove the matrix there is normally on most eggs a white layer of calcite mineral. Third and finally zoom in on the images look closely and spot the little air holes indicating it's actually a cast.
Haravex
Also for a little help highlighting these points I have pointed out. a real egg versus this cast. Edit just to note this one I posted below is a real one I'm prepping currently and physically holding it can see it's the genuine article.
