Rugose coral??

Hello:

 

My father in law had these specimens in a drawer and we were trying to identify.  He worked all over the country so there is not telling about the location.   My internet sleuthing says rugose coral?

 

Thanks for any input.

It's not identifiable as coral. There may be some kind of fossil inside the piece on the left though. It looks like concretion, which sometimes nucleates on fossils .

My thought on the other one is perhaps vesicular basalt.

I agree with Rockwood's assessment. A rugose coral would be displaying some very key diagnostic features that this piece does not have.

I agree with Rockwood and Kane, it looks like some weird concretions with a square hole running down the length of the center  we discussed here
