fossil_sea_urchin
I was looking through some fossils on an auction house website, when I saw some dinosaur eggs labelled as saltasaurus or argentinosaurus. Does anyone have any views on it?
Kane
I removed the lot number as that may identify the seller, which is something we do not permit here as our focus is on establishing the authenticity of the specimen exclusively of any other considerations. 1 ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
steelhead9
Is this an old auction? I don’t think any reputable auction house would risk selling Argentinian dinosaur eggs as export of them is strictly prohibited. Unless they have ironclad provenance of pre-ban export. 5 Still Life Fossils

This is an older sale, ... but not sure how old. Supposedly from Uruguay. "This sale is now finished. If you are interested in consigning in future sales, please contact the specialist department. Seguidora-de-Isis
Yes, here in Argentina is strictly prohibited the sale of fossils. The matrix that covers this egg is completely different from the matrix we see here in Argentina: So I also believe that it is from Uruguay, and if this egg is from Uruguay, then it can be from any sauropod. So, indeterminate sauropod is still the best identification taking into account that the oospecies of Uruguay are little studied. 5 Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question! HamptonsDoc
Looks very real and looks like a South American Sauropod.... can't give you any more information than that based off what you provided. Fossils from Argentina are highly illegal and will be repatriated if found.... I believe fossils from Uruguay are ok for export but I'm no law expert!

Fossils from Argentina are highly illegal and will be repatriated if found.... I believe fossils from Uruguay are ok for export but I'm no law expert! In Uruguay, people may have a collection of national fossils, but even if these fossils are in private collections, fossils are still considered state assets. But only fossils collected by the collectors themselves can be stored, because you can not buy or sell fossils in Uruguay. On the other hand, there are large holes in this law (La Ley de Patrimonio), and these holes imply that the sale of fossils is allowed, and many people in Uruguay use this hole (confusion in the law) to sell inside the country and even export the fossils. With all this, the chances of a Uruguayan fossil export being repatriated are remote, but in this case, it will be difficult even to prove that the Fossil Egg is from Uruguay and not from Argentina, because the oospecies of these two countries are practically the same. And this is because the two countries (Uruguay and Argentina are very close to each other). So the egg is from Uruguay, but in the absence of evidence, the egg may be from Argentina. 1 Is It real, or it's not real, that's the question! -Andy-
I am with @HamptonsDoc The egg looks like the "typical" Saltasaurus from Argentina/Uruguay. More pictures would be helpful, but for now I say it's genuine. Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!
