Michigan rest stop

Just beforehand my exit on the highway, I really needed to use the restroom, and pulled off at a rest area. This was quite lucky, since there was a very large piece of shale sitting in front. The whole thing was a giant hash plate. It was heavily weathered though and there were a bunch of fragments strewn around. I ended up finding quite a few nice pieces in the debris on the ground.

Here's the rock and a closeup.

First is a couple small hash pieces.

Next is a couple of brachiopods (plus a small fragment of one).

The best though was a trilo pygidium. The matrix was soaked from the rain and a few bits fell off, unfortunately.

And finally, a small piece of hash that has what looks like copper on it?

All in all pretty good for a random rock. I really have no idea what age it might be, though. Thus I'm not sure if anyone could ID the trilo-bit or the brachiopods, but please share if you have any thoughts.

Nice finds!

Don't know the area, but they are spiriferid brachiopods.

Some super bryozoans there as well, it seems. :)

I agree with pyrite and Devonian. Those spiriferid brachiopods look Middle Devonian. Eldredgeops is a Middle Devonian trilobite. A lot of bryozoan material there.

I agree, nice finds for a random rock!

Is that a bivalve in the upper right of the shot with 3 pieces?

As random rocks go, that’s not a bad find. Good eye!
