Ammonite Shell or something else?

I cracked open a nodule last year on the Yorkshire Coast and it contained this Pseudolioceras Ammonite.

It had this weird brown stuff all over it, was this the shell?

As found

I tried to clean it up and clear the middle with my pen.

Looks like a pyrite incrustation.

The rock was relatively soft for Yorkshire standards wouldn't it spread all over?

There is no accounting for where the minerals will chose to grow . Maybe there was a stress crack in the area where the pyrite grew over the shell.

From the second picture it looks like a pyrite replacement.

Maybe one of the locals can chime in on this.

Looks like pyrite to me @LiamL but you seem to have shifted most of it. Was it difficult?

Came right off easily with the side of the pen tip, reminded me of shell. Probably is pyrite but unusual how it grew only round the outside.

I'll go along with pyrite replacement, although it's hard to tell from the photos.

If it helps i posted a video of it on my instagram page when i found it

Looking at the first picture a little closer and noticed the "black" layer is chipped (level with top finger.) exposing what looks like pyrite under it. That could indicate the black layer is the shell and the pyrite filled the interior of the shell (ie a steinkern).

That's basically it although the pyrite isn't usually a solid steinkern with these, just a thin layer between the filling matrix and the shell. I think the pyrite may actually be a replacement of a shell inner lamination. It often forms where organic material has decomposed.
