Flags Pond - What Did I Come From?

Hello all,

Went to Flags Pond yesterday and found a piece of vertebra and possibly a tooth(?) I am having a difficult time identifying.

For the vertebra, what species did it come from?

For the second item, is it a tooth? If so, what species did it come from?

Thanks,

Shauna

I’m not really sure but the 1 st one looks like a bit broken of the vertebrae and the second looks like some beak but I’m not really sure :)

For some reason I doubt the bone is a vert, but I can't really say for sure.

The second one is most likely a hyperostotic fish (tilly) bone.

Could you try to take a close up of item #2 and get pics from other side as well?

I would agree with "Tilly" on that one.

Here is one I got out of Temblor Formation in Bakersfield. The only one I have ever found there. 22mm x 17mm

I'd say that the first one looks like a beach-worn hyplural bone from a tuna. This is the fan-shaped bone which attaches the caudal ray fins to the end of the vertebrae.
