Possible whale vertebra? It's huge!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I found this huge, possible vertebra today and would really like some help with the ID. I'm thinking it might be a whale. I'm not too sure but I think the area is Miocene but I also see references to Cretaceous. This is from the South Island of New Zealand. It's about 10inches wide (25cm).

Thanks!

Very cool find! I'd love to one day find a washed up modern whale vert! It would definitely be carried off the beach by me!

Looks more like a pseudofossil to me.

Does look like a vertebra. But as the others have said, very worn down.

Thanks!

That's not cretaceous, and even if it would be a modern whale's bone, i would be so pleased to find one.

Excellent bone, I'm guessing this is from Motunau or Glen Afric?
