Drive-by roadkill skunk and close proximity skunk spray are two completely different smells!

Nice bison by the way!

Thank you. I’m hoping to go out Monday and collect a bit more. Monday is a work holiday here. It will be freezing tomorrow and I’ve been out in the cold a lot today with the wind being that chilling type that kind of slices right through you.

This is the assemblage of what I have so far on my bison minus the skull, another thoracic vertebra, a rib or 2 and some odd bones. I think I have some pieces of the 3 thoracic vertebrae that are broken.

I have

20 vertebrae if you count the sacrum as a vertebra. 19 without the sacrum.

   1 - caudal vertebra

6 - cervical vertebrae including the atlas and axis vertebrae.

   10 - thoracic vertebrae  1 not pictured

     2 - lumbar vertebrae

     1 - sacrum

2 - halves of pelvic bone

     2 - femur

     1 - humerus

2 radius with partial fused ulna

     1 metacarpal

     1 hove piece

2 feet or lower leg bones which I             think are carpel bones.

Assorted large bone fragments which I think are from the pelvic area

     5 or 6 rib pieces

The light colored bones are the ones I found the first time back in June 2018, but didn’t know it was a bison till a week ago.

I absolutely love the smell of skunk. My wife thinks I’m crazy, but it’s a great smell to me. I don’t know why that is and I know there’s a few other people that I know that also like that smell.

...I'm back.

Great find Kim.! Were you able to figure out how old it is?

No. It would seem to be Pleistocene from the layering and strata above it, but I’m not a geologist and can’t confirm that it is Pleistocene.

I started another thread.

I posted this elsewhere, but thought I’d put it on this thread for whomever may read the thread in the future and wish to know.

The bison was identified by Tom Vance as Bison antiquus 2/13/2019.

I’m still excited about it. I hope to post the 2nd day of excavation/extraction this evening or tomorrow.

Hello I was reading through these posts recently. On the very first page you mentioned reading a reference book that lead you to your discovery. There's an image that shows the morphological differences between bison and cattle carpals.Do you recall the name or author of the book you posted the isme from? I'm always looking for a good reference book. I apologize if it's included somewhere else in your blog. Haven't finished reading through it all yet. What a great story!
