Jones1rocks
Hi all, I have been having some trouble with this specimen. It came from a large collection of Mazon pieces I purchased a number of years back from collector Ron Brandt of Normal, Illinois, who self-collected and also purchased several extensive collections from others. Originally it was identified by someone (too far in the past) as an egg sac of some sort, but after some discussion with someone I would consider an expert, a fellow named Dan Damrow, who some of you may know, some doubt has been cast on that identification. I would be interested in any comments or insights you may have. Thanks, Paul
ynot
Neat looking piece! Maybe @Nimravis can help. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Raggedy Man
Never seen anything like it from there. Maybe @Nimravis or @RCFossils can help. 1 ...I'm back.
Nimravis
I agree with Dan Damrow that it does not look like any egg sack / case that I have or seen. I do not recall seeing something like this.

RCFossils
Definitely not an egg sac. What you have there is a shrimp carapace. my guess is either Belotelson or Lobetelson. There is something that has a similar shape that collectors used to refer to as cockroach egg cases (they are not). what was actually thought to be an egg case was actually a megaspore. My guess is that’s where the egg ID came from.
DPS Ammonite
How about a shark (or chondrichthyes) egg case. I see some interesting mineral molds/casts: pyrite? See: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/a-very-rare-shark-egg-case-fossil-mazon-creek and https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Egg_case_(Chondrichthyes) My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. RCFossils
If you are wondering how I was able to ID your fossil, I have a similar example. You can see a bit more of the rostrum preserved.
