lucky split during preppjob

This week I've been prepping a few goniatites that I had lying around.

This one didn't look very promising, but  what a surprise I got when I tried to remove it from the matrix.

a few hits with the chissle and it came out perfectly. I just had to remove the extremities and clean out the center with an airscribe.

It turned out to be one of my best specimens

It doesn't always work out like that, sadly I have a few others that didnt make it. I try to glue back tha faild splits and cut and pollish them.

Yes, the shell is always left in the matrix, I had no succes removing one with the shell still on.

Thank you,  It is late Devonian ( Frasnian ) in age thats more or les 375 mj old

I'm still sorting out all my unpreped specimens to find som ones with good potential, I tried to split open a few others this week without luck, until this morning:

A singel hit on the side and he also went pop   I'll have to prepp this on this afternoon

I don't know how often you find these, but you have you ever considered prepping one out so as to leave the shell on the goniatite, so you have a specimen that shows the outer surface/ornamentation? (Ie. Split it if you have to, then glue the two pieces back together and prep away the matrix down to the outer shell surface)

they are not common to find, especially in this size, I've tried multiple times to prep them with the shell, but I encounter multiple problems.

the shell is not always well preserved, the matrix is extreemely hard so I have a realy hard time getting through with the airscribe and the cristalized structure of the shell often crumbles when getting to close.

I tried to cut through the matrix until I got realy close to the fossil, and then start prepping, but I  still couldnt get the shell intact.

 

but I got a few smaller goniatites from other layers where I got them with shell preservation, It happens most of the time on my tornoceras specimens like this one:
