Jules270
Need help identifying this claw. Found in Dallas. There is clearly a hollowed out indention on one side that does not go through (lighter area due to cleaning to see if hole went through) and a notch-like indention on the other. The top edge of the claw appears to have been chiseled, as there are distinct chisel marks that go around the entire top of the claw Could this claw have been made into ancient jewelry or tool artifact? ynot
Welcome to TFF! Sorry, this is not a claw. It looks like a partial steinkern. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Jules270
I'm sorry I'm not seeing that. I'm new to this fossil finding, but the underside looks very much claw like.

Jules270
Oh I'm seeing the slight swirl now, makes more sense now regarding the "chiseled" edge ! Thank you!!

KimTexan
That is a very unusual ammonite for Dallas. I hunt ammonites a lot in the area and they are all limestone, chalk or clay. It must be from the Woodbine formation. That’s the only formation I can think of that would produce an ammonite of that material. I suppose parts of the Eagle Ford may be able to produce something like that. Do you know the formation? Was it found in Dallas city limits or just in the metroplex? I don’t know of any Woodbine exposure in Dallas city limits, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any. Hang onto that one. It’s an uncommon find. I have never found one of that type of stone. I’d be interested in knowing the general area if you’re willing to share the city if other than Dallas.
LordTrilobite
I think westcoast is spot on. That looks like a partial Ammonite. Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
