Palaeobates may or may not have a transverse crest and the crest can develop into a cusp as in that specimen. The wrinkled surface is similar to what I have seen before in the genus. The specimens I have bear a more dimpled crown texture sort of like a golf ball but mine might be just worn that way. That tooth appears unusual because of the constriction near its mid-point. I don't know if that indicates a pathology or minor variation. Another possibility would be a lateral tooth of some form of Acrodus which can have an irregular shape like that. Hi Tony, It's too old to be Heterodontus but it does look like one even down to the wrinkled texture of the crown surface and the transverse crest.
