Is this a velociraptor claw?

Hello everyone. I saw this fossil on an auction site and labeled as a velociraptor claw from Argentina but I heard that velociraptor is incredibly rare. Does anyone have any opinions on this and is it a real velociraptor claw or some other dromeosaurid?  In my opinion it looks more like a tooth. Thanks.

A few problems wrong with this listing. Velociraptor is from Mongoli, not Argentina so it’s not possible this fossil could be from Velocirpator. Another problem is this isn’t a claw. Maybe a piece of bone from the Hell Creek Formation? But doesn’t look like a Velociraptor claw from Mongolia nor a fossil from Argentina.

More pictures would help, but I would compare to raptor claws online.

Hello Pterygotus,

Velociraptor fossils come from Mongolia not Argentina. The fossil you have there also doesn't look like a claw. Claws have more of a hook shape to them (see the picture below).

Do you know what it could be?

Listing indicates its jurassic.  Seller does not appear knowledgeable so you should pass.  He purchased it in a fossil shop in the Netherlands.  Hard to say where its from.  Preservation is not mongolian but could be from Argentina or north america.  Most of Argentina's  dino material however is cretaceous. Definitely not a claw.

As the others said, it cannot be from a Velociraptor since Velociraptor only appears in Mongolia. It also does not look very much like any claw. More like a weird tooth maybe.

Here's what a Velociraptor claw looks like.

No, location info is very inaccurate and it definetly doesn’t look like a claw. I think closest identification you could get would be “fossil”.

Velociraptor here in Argentina?

I'll start digging tomorrow!

I'll try to find a whole skeleton and I will not even give you a bone!  :P

No, but thoughts....

1) You have no idea what provenance is... your dealer might have just made it up because he did not know.

2) Might as well provide length -- 6 or 7 cm ????

3)  Looks like it has a carina on left edge... Does it?

4) looks like a tooth, you might ask for possibilities ... Croc ?

Hope you didn't get this. Definitely not a claw of any kind.

I have no idea if it's even a tooth.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!
