Your Favorite Paleoart

Which are your favorite pieces of Paleoart?

Something that captured your imagination when you were younger? Something that accompanies your fossil collection?

My personal top three is all ''water themed'', in no particular order:

From The book of Great Sea-Dragons , this art by John Martin even if totally inaccurate striked me for the grim and dark atmosphere and apocalytical view.

hawmarsd.jpg

Another inaccurate one but these brachiosaurus appeared in a booklet I had when I was a kid and alwas hit my imagination and now I can appreciate Burian's artistic skills.

bur1m.jpg

Eventually something more modern, Globidens by Dan Varner ( which passed away too soon) I like how he captured the feeling of  marine life and water, his creatures weren't merely floating in a blue background.

My favorite is the Ceratosaurus drawing at the Children's Museum. They have a WHOLE WALL of Paleoart and my favorite has always been the Ceratosaurus. It is just an awesome piece of art and although it is small it portrays the dinosaur so well! I have not seen any pictures or reproductions of it so it might be one-of-a-kind!

This one - Velociraptor Hunting Dance, by renown paleo-artist Emily Willoughby :) I think it's the first paleo-artwork I saw that really captured the bird-like appearance of non-avian theropods.

And it's really beautiful, too!

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Q. Where do dinosaurs study?

A. At Khaan Academy!...

Burian's

Nices topic and I second that thought by share this painting again. It is from a book my sister gave me when I was about 7 years old and still have and treasures it . This image is still one of my favourite paintings. By Zdeněk Burian and probably the reason I still really like Dimetrodon in fact it is my favourite of all prehistoric critters.

Jay H. Matternes. There was a series of gorgeous paintings of Cenozoic periods in a childhood favourite book of mine, North America by Peter Farb (Time-Life). This is just one of those paintings. I would certainly recommend them all.

I used to gaze over these images long and often. Over a series of moves, I was separated from this childhood favourite for 25+ years until I found a copy for 50 cents at an annual charity book sale a few years back.

Bingo!  For me, his paintings in the Nat. Geo. Young Explorers book "Dinosaurs" were mesmerizing.

I wonder if there has ever been a fossil of a creature that died asperating on something that was aspirating on something else.

ie: your Plioplatecarpus chokes on the bird which was choking on the fish.

I think yes, he  was born in 1789, died in 1854 and painted biblical themes like Belshazzar's Feast.

Forgot to add I love the plates from  A history of  British fossil reptiles like this one by J. Dinkel

Wow!! Thank you, Darktooth! :) It makes my day to know you like the shark that much. I make prints of most of my work including this one, so if you'd like one just PM me.

It's been a while since I've posted any paleo art up here though, so I'll try to get some more stuff up fairly soon.

I love this book called Walking with Prehistoric Beasts, which also had a show (I didn't know this until recently). A lot of the snapshots were amazing, such as this Enteledont standoff:

Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such.

There quite a few paleoartists I do admire!

My favorite has to be Davide Bonadonna, who I first got to know in 2014 when National Geographic Magazine covered an article on Spinosaurus. I absolutely love his Spinosaurus related art, but also his other pieces :)

Another Paleoartist I like is Julius Csotonyi, I have a book with his paleoart and I truly love it!
