Chamois or Red Deer teeth?

Darko

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

Today i went to my first fossil hunt this year and it was quite succesfull! I went to one Big Cave in Village of Zabrega, Paraćin.That Cave itself is enormous!

I Will add some photos of it.

But i'm here because of something else..I found couple of lower and upper jaws and also these 2 teeth..Not sure what is it..I'm thinking Deer...Chamois in my region has gone few thousand years ago...I found all of them in that Cave.If someone can identify this as well as jaws it Will be quite nice.

Warm regards,

Darko

Ditto - I'm no good at ID'ing mammal fossils; but seriously, that mountain landscape is wonderful!

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Q. Where do dinosaurs study?

A. At Khaan Academy!...

Which Chamois are you referring to?

Rupicarpa balcanica or carpatica

Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica - the balkan chamois is extant.

The red deer of your region is probably Cervus elaphus hippelaphus - the Central European red deer.

" R. r. balcanica (Balkan chamois): Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, northern Greece (the Pindus Mountains),[5] Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Slovenia (isolated populations)[4] "- according to Wikipedia :headscratch:

The other one, also extant, is from Romania.
" R. r. carpatica (Carpathian chamois): Romania" - Wikipedia

Have you ruled out the sheep / goat possibility for some of them?

The mandible appears to me to have deciduous teeth, particularly the p3.  The maxillae seem to be from adults.  I don't see goat.

I'm referring to the one in the alamy stock photo, labeled as sheep lower jaw.
What you are referring to saying " Most likely Roe deer.Quite small as u see " ?
