deepblue
Hi, I recently purchased this fossil on everyone's favorite auction site. The seller didn't know where it was found or of its provenance. I was thinking it could be by its size and teeth, however I would like input from others on the site. I've been collecting fossil for some time now and haven't seen anything like it. Thanks! Edited January 31, 2019 by deepblue
gigantoraptor
The same skull was shown here some time ago. It's a composite from the Miocene deposits of the Gansu province in China.

Perhaps a small amount of the skull is genuine but many of them are made to look more impressive than what they are. For example in some cases larger teeth are added to make the original look more impressive. Regardless it's still a cool piece
Nimravis
Hit it with a black light to see what has been added and also to check on the teeth.
deepblue
Quote Good idea. I'll try the uv light tonight. What would be fluorescing, the glue or the putty? Edited January 31, 2019 by deepblue

You might want to merely shine the UV light upon it. "Hitting" tends to damage the delicate fossil structure.

Innocentx
Ralph knows how to beat the censor. I admire that and we could all learn something here. "Journey through a universe ablaze with changes" Phil Ochs
