Jurassic of the north of France

Yesterday Natalie and me went on a windy fieldtrip to the coast of the north of France, this time searching for jurassic ( Titionian ) fossils.

Although this site is less productive than the late cretaceous sites in the area we always manage to find some iteresting things.

Most of the comon fossils here are bivalve "steinkerns" but from time to time we find ammonites and bone fragments of marine reptiles.

the first decent find was a rib fragment of marine reptile, the piece was well embedded in the matrix and very brittel, I managed to get it out, but in a lot of fragments.

This wil be a puzzle to put back together once the pieces are dry.

Halfway the clay cliffs Natalie found a huge ammonite between the boulders. we removed as much matrix as possible and helped with a fragment of fishnet from the beach we dragged the fossil back to the car

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Beautiful finds, especially that enormous ammonite!  Are you planning on prepping it out further?  If so, I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's done...

Massive ammonite!

Some of the smaller ones are nice too.

Good photos, but looks a little too cold and wet for me.

Thanks for sharing.:)

@belemniten

Sebastian, Natalie glued the bone back together this weekend, but a lot of the smaller parts were lost, they yust crumbled to dust.

do you have an idea of what annimal it could have been?

I think it is a rib fragment, the piece is more or les 20 cm long and 4 cm wide.

I'm thinking of a limb bone, maybe a partial plesiosaur podial? :headscratch:

the original piece was very long, the imprint in the rocks of the original bone was more than 70cm long, I only got a small part that was still in the bedrock, al the rest was eroded away :(

Okay... Now I'm having doubts about my previous assessment - plesiosaur podials don't really reach 70cm....

the 2 groves on the side of the bone are strange, they were also visible in the whole inprint in the bedrock.

Thanks for tagging me @Manticocerasman !

I am not sure if its possible to ID this bone. At the first glance I even had some doubts if its really a bone ... Can you take a picture of a cross section?

Hi Sebastian,

It's deffinitly bone. We think a piece of rib. The possible candidates are Ophtalmosaurus, plesiosaurus or pliosaurus. Dinosaur can be found there too, but very very rare.

PS: the preparation is not finished, Kevin couldn't wait :D
