Is it coral or a flower?

My Dad was given a few slabs of this rock from a friend in Phoenix, AZ. We can’t figure out what it is. Similar to coral fossils but they aren’t circle in shape. When he cut and polished it, it was really hard. Any ideas?

It looks like a volcanic porphyry: large crystals set in fine grained mass. Similar stones are known as Chinese Flower Stones.

Here are pictures of some found from British Columbia in Canada:

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

What you have there is  called "Chrysanthemum Stone", sometimes "Flower Stone".

That seems to be a tricky one!

Chrysanthemum Stone

That usually consists of rather soft minerals (Mohs < 4)

It contradicts with this:

This statement is very subjective, though. @Wookmom, are you able to scratch this stone with a knife blade easily?
