garyc
This may be a long shot. Can anyone I’d this vert I found on the Brazos River in Texas?

jcbshark
Nice find Gary.... I’ve got one like that as well so I’m all ears Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!
fossilus
Could this be a proboscidean caudal vertebra? The length would rule out most animals. These screen shots are from the University of Michigan website where they have 3D mammoth and mastodon skeletal elements, and are a mastodon caudal (they don't have mammoth caudals) https://umorf.ummp.lsa.umich.edu/wp/mammutidae2/ Not exactly the same but it's always bothered me that I often find sloth caudal verts but nothing that I can say is definitely elephant, even though I've found many mammoth and mastodon bones and multiple teeth.

fossilus
Thanks! I agree I don't know of a better way to ID mammoth or mastodon material!
