Yoda
Hi All. Opinions please. I found this item on everyone’s fave auction site. 14cm Seems a side on view? Aside from the obvious repair, any red flags? MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector
Fossildude19
This to me looks like an OK piece. Not sure on ID, as there are no fins present. Looks like perhaps a bit of the lower jaw in the upper left side. Quite a bit of disarticulation as well. FossilDAWG
The first image looks like an impression, but Tim's version looks like the fish is actually there. Which one is correct? This issue is why there is a convention in paleontology journals to always have the lighting from the upper left relative to the photo. That way there is no ambiguity about what is sticking up and what is a depression in the rock. Don

I rotated it, and cranked up the contrast a bit, giving the illusion of it being the positive side. Not a complete fish, but not bad. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." FossilDAWG
Either way, I also think it is a pretty interesting specimen. Don
Yoda
The photo I posted is as from the website. Having a close look it does seem like an impression? The cost is a lot less than I have seen other Osteolepis going for (roughly 1/3) MotM August 2023 - Eclectic Collector
LordTrilobite
The head seems a little busted up. But this looks completely real. Fairly similar preservation to the one I have in my own collection. My Osteolepis fossil as example. 2 Olof Moleman AKA Lord Trilobite
Yoda
After some consideration I think I am going to pass on this specimen. I am after an Osteo, but would prefer a more typical specimen. So will continue to keep a lookout for a decent priced one.
