Hi I thought this fish was quite interesting but as the seller provides very little information and I see lots of composite fish I wanted to see what you guys thought:)

From these pretty blurry pictures I think this is an original Rhacolepis buccalis from the Cretaceous Santana formation in Brazil.

The pictures are quite blurry, but I don't see any obvious signs of compositing done.

Agree, looks like a real Rhacolepis buccalis

Fossils from Brazil are getting more and more rare on the open market since all export is banned and there are heavy punishments. These fishes occur from time to time but are not too common.

Bad photos and no information probably why it is cheap . It could be a bargain. :dinothumb:

Not common at cheap prices. ;)

I've found on the auction sites, many people selling fossils have no clue as to what they are selling.

They may take a stab at ID's, but they sometimes are wrong.

I just picked up a rare catfish fossil that was identified as a Knightia

People will often times just go with what may look similar.

I've seen Gosiutichthys, Diplomystus, Mioplosus, and Astephus labeled as Knightia, or  Knightia listed as Diplomystus.

Always best to check here first. ;)

The poor photos notwithstanding, I think it looks pretty good for the species.  Also these fish have become scarcer and more pricy since Brazil started enforcing the ban on exporting fossils.

I picked up a small Rhacolepis labeled as

"Florida fossil".

Something tells me they didn't know what they had.
