Al Tahan
I’m in Toronto this weekend with my fiancé to have an engagement party with her Canadian side of the family. I’ve been to the ROM once but now that I’m on the forum I figured I would give a 2019 update on what’s here!! I’ll add photos throughout the day. This place is amazing

Al Tahan
Ok just a few topics im gonna cover: - Zuul the new anklosaur! -some obligatory Dino pictures -dawn of life gallery preview! (Not open yet but they had 1 room as a preview. Can’t wait) -the large Eurypterid on display has been kinda ruined from over prep. I’ll have pics showing what they did. Not sure why but they tampered with it way too much. It looks odd and actually smells funny. Too much paining and nonsense. Shame. Pictures to come in a little while

Al Tahan
The Zuul display was a special display that you had to get tickets for along with a few other special displays. They had the actual recovered remains on display along with some other anklosaurs. the classic anklosaurus we see in the textbooks was HUGE!! Zuul is next. My fiancé is standing in for scale lol
Al Tahan
Check out that noggin! the tail is thought to have been buried early making the preservation exceptional.
Al Tahan
Zuul was buried on its back belly up. So the back armor and skin was preserved amazingly. Imagine the prep job
Al Tahan
Heres a reconstruction of Zuul. The legs were not recovered mostly likely due to scavenging so some had to be interpreted. Other dinos are next!!

Al Tahan
Ok I’m back! ..I’ll quickly post the Dino pictures before bed. tomorrow I’ll finish up with the preview of the dawn of life gallery and the acutiramus Eurypterid on display. Not dinos but what’s a dinosaur exhibit without Marine reptiles! Lol. these ichtyosaurs have minimal restoration. Probably 95% complete specimens. Literally jaw dropping
Al Tahan
Pretty sure this was the allosaurus The classic stegosaurus I was in a huge rush in this section so I basically took pictures as I walked and I won’t know everything I’m showing. I love the hadrosaur diversity. I miss geeking out on all the dinosaur species and when each one lived and how it fit in the timeline. We often get dinosaurs mashed into one serving as if they lived all at once. It’s amazing when you learn about how stegosaurs and T. rex lived longer apart in time then T. rex and humans. this fella was BIG!
rebu
Amazing specimens, the size and preservation of these beasts is just incredible. Thank you for sharing.
Al Tahan
Nature getting crazy with skull evolution!! Evolution arms race...protection!!
Al Tahan
Some of the horned dinosaurs really got diverse Tyrannosaurus rex was pretty darn huge. Allosaurus and Albertosaurus got nothing on rex. When I saw it today I was thinking “no wonder everyone goes wild over T. rex...look at this BOSS!’” hard to imagine this in flesh...it would be quite scary
Al Tahan
Last 2 Dino pics....I didn’t have enough time to really get more quality photos to share. Pretty sure this is a cast of Sue the T. rex. the crushed part of the skull really looks like sue. Maybe someone reading can confirm. Anyway crazy nice skull!! tomorrow I’ll finish up.

Al Tahan
The dawn of life gallery is in the works but they had a single room open as a preview. They have a whole wall dedicated to the Burgess Shale and the early creatures that have been found. Looks like they are gonna feature a lot of trilobites as well . I also know for a fact the Eurypterids will get some attention as well. I can’t believe how big this Isothelus is!! some very nice quality crinoids and St Clair ferns I couldn’t believe this plate was real from Morocco!!! Those are some big trilobites in a beautiful cluster. Obviously it’s real but it was just amazing to see up close . this dunkleostesus was found in Ohio. I would just love to see how these are deposited, preserved and found. I know the armor plates are what get preserved but are they all scattered or semi assembled? Are they just massive chunks of armor that comes out the the shale? I heard of a site in Ohio that has one weathering out of a cliff but the owners won’t let scientists dig it up but let’s them collect the beast as it erodes out of the cliff. They said it will take 30+ years to get it all out in 1000s of pieces. Bummer. Such a dominant beast from way back in the Devonian. I wonder if anyone has ever found parts or pieces in the Devonian shales of buffalo.
Al Tahan
They had a nice wall display of Burgess Shale fossils and a cool animation in the background showing life in the Cambrian. The display was cool. It showed the fossil then showed the interpreted body plan of the animal... dude these critters were weird!!! Pretty much our best guess on some of these it seems. Wacky looking creatures out of science fiction lol. ill post the last part about the Eurypterid later tonight!
Wrangellian
Zuul! I think I know why they called it that. (Ghostbusters) Thanks for the tour! btw you might need to reorganize your lines with regard to the pictures... it's a little confusing when a line runs into an unrelated pic. Either way, what I do is put no space between the caption and the pic it refers to, but I put a space between each pic/caption pair, if you know what I mean

Thanks for the feedback! There is still time to edit your posts above, to tidy it up a bit... I wonder how much Burgess material they have on display? Their collection must be impressive, given that much of the collecting in the last few decades has been by the ROM, but most of it I assume is in drawers in back rooms. I may never make it there to see it myself so I appreciate when people can post pics of it. The Royal BC Museum's total Burgess holdings, by contrast, fit in one flat display case:
