I needed help identifying this tree bark. Its about 38 million years old from the Renton Formation in Western Washington State.
I can see insect burrow marks but they could also be the details in the tree itself. Its about 12 inches long and 5 ish inches wide

these images suck. I apologize btw for the quality.

Yes, a little bit out of focus. Maybe try again tomorrow using natural light? I don't have a good photo setup but find my best pictures are often taken in a shaded area just away from direct sunlight. Seems to improve coloration and contrast.

If you do take more pics, please take some end view photos as well.

Hmmmm, I re took the photos and they looked great. Then I uploaded them and they look a bit blurry. Don't know how to fix this.

Do they look fine when you download and look at them on a computer?

No, they look fine when they are on my phone. When I put them on my computer it almost seems as though its trying to auto brighten or something

Hmm, frustrating for you.

I'm sure you've already tried the usual tricks of ensuring the phone camera is on maximum resolution, cleaned the lens, take the pic with the flash set to on and not auto, etc. One time by powering down my phone and restarting it the same problem cleared up for me. Sometimes low light or cloud filtered light can cause the camera to take blurry pics especially with the slightest of hand movements.

Back in the day they made a devise which I still use. It was a marvelous invention dedicated solely to taking photographs. :)

ha-ha. As pixel resolution increases it can become expensive to chase after higher resolution every few years, then there are the multiple devices to carry when wandering and collecting. I confess to getting a bit lazy in this area and using my cellphone as the singular mode of capturing photos. Mainly because I made a promise to friends and family I would not go into the backcountry without some kind of phone.

My current phone is 8 MP and looking at a 12MP due to the need to zoom and have more resolution while afoot. Maybe one day, when higher resolutions are more affordable, I will get one of those old timey devices (camera) again.

You can buy a used 20-megapixel camera online for $20 -- no need to wait; start taking detailed photos right now. Get a $10 table-top tripod to go with it and you will never have shaky photos anymore.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
