Pliosaur model

It’s been enjoyable talking to people in the forum and sharing a common interest so I thought I would share some old images of a rough pliosaur model I made years ago. I think I modelled it on a kronosaurus and went with a sort of ‘elephant seal’ bulk look as at the time I was reading about marine reptiles inhabiting colder southern seas. I was trying to get the impression of size in the photos - a sort of divers perspective as it cruised past uncomfortably close:muahaha: ....

Cool! It's well realized pliosaurus! I'd like to see more pics of it!

Thanks guys - I will try and dig it out and take some more pics for you  - I’m not sure how well it’s survived in storage though

Here’s some more pics. Unfortunately the clay has cracked away from the sheet plastic flippers so I’m going to repair it a bit.

im also thinking to increase the size of the front flippers slightly and also refine the tail a bit as it’s bugging me... any other suggestions for corrections while I’m at it ?

Aww it looks like poor pliosaur didn't fare too well.  Still a pretty awesome model though.  If you're going to work on it, it wouldn't hurt to add a modest tail fluke as per current trends for pliosaurs and mosasaurs.

Nice!

How about some countershading?

I can’t find any research that gives pliosaurs tail flukes / fins. It seems there’s some for plesiosaurs. I have thought about manoeuvrability a bit though and I’m trying to do something on that aspect.

- with regards to the counter shading - it’s currently dark grey on top and cream/ white underneath. Is this what you mean , or something different?

Yes, thats what I meant.

I just didn´t look close enough to tell this apart from the white spots where you are repairing it.

They most definitely had some tail fin. I read somewhere (correct me if I am wrong) ometimes there is a hint in the tail: an irregular vertebra usually is a clue where the tail bends down forming lower lobe and the upper lobe starts (formed with only soft tissues).

So i was lucky enough to be able to have a conversation with Dr Hillary Ketchum from the Oxford University Museum who specialises in the study of plesiosaurs and pliosaurs. It was a pretty amazing coincidence to find the right person at the right time but she was really helpful! Essentially her view was that there is a little evidence for a small 'fluke' on some plesiosaurs but that there is no evidence of anything for pliosaurs - they just don't know. I also discussed the other idea ive got about the manoeuvrability aspect of the creature with her and she was actually really excited and positive about it - she even wants me to send some images of it when it's done to her - so no pressure then! - i'd better crack on with it!
