Can we get a picture of the other side, please?

My first thought is concretion, or nodule.

The contours of that thin inner layer of the lighter coating appears to curve more than I would expect in the absence of noticeable cracks. It was actually your best shot at shell.

Can you distinguish a texture that is different in that thin layer ?

Definitely  looks a lot like barnacle on a boat hull like you could separate it out of the outer material

A basaltic(?) pebble with calcite or gypsum crust? (caliche-like formation?)

Thanks for taking the time to look at it appreciate it and so do my 7 and 9 yr olds who found it. We didn’t split it found it looking for Pecos Diamonds. Looks cool anyway
