Last Saturday I was in the quarry Kromer (Posidonia Shale, Lower Jurassic) for the first time of the year.

Maybe some of you already noticed this topic:

http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/93302-prepping-a-plate-with-some-ichthyosaur-vertebrae/

Beside of this plate I also found some other cool things but firstly here is a picture of the quarry:

You are allowed to search in the heaps on the left behind the white car. The material isn't that bad at the moment. I was there about 6 hours and I found about 6 teeth. I already prepped three Stenosaurus (crocodile) teeth:

1 cm long:

1.8 cm long: (the best one)

5c8ad7483093e_3(2).thumb.JPG.0e59e0954ffab3963c664785f2c4ba3d.JPG

And 1.2 cm long: (damaged)

I also found this fish:

fisch.JPG.8b67b2a638d656e6ec41c306335ac0dc.JPG

The cross section is about 5 cm long and it will need very much prep work... I don't think that I will do this one in the near future although a friend and expert said that this is a kinda nice find!

My favourite finds were the bones. I found several incomplete ones which I didn't take home but also the plate with the vertebrae and another plate with some bones on it.

Here is a picture of one of the visible bones:

5c8ad771b5d09_unprpariert.thumb.JPG.afa188221638a7c3542126df4f007f79.JPG

I think that should be an Ichthyosaur

Humerus but I am not entire sure. I will post some more pictures of it tomorrow and after the prep. There are also a couple of ribs on the plate so it could be interesting!

And for all the invertebrate fans. Here is a sweet little ammonite: :D

Thanks for watching!!

Well done.  I love that place.  Is the old man still running it?

Good pickings this time around, Sebastian! That fishy looks like it could be interesting, but a bit of a challenge to prep.

Thanks Roger :)

I just prepped the bone plate from which I showed the unprepped picture above. Its a bit easier to prep than the plate with the vertebrae but its still challenging. I think I worked about 2 hours on it now and the stone is partly kinda hard and the surface structure is a bit fragile ... I dont think that it will turn out as good as the plate with the vertebrae but still not too bad.

nice finds Sebastian. I love the teeth.

do you have to pay to acces the quarries around Holzmaden?

growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.

Sebastian, you  should use air abrasive methods, instead of picking tools. Otherwise it will be hard to prep the fish.

If you are not familiar with prepping the fish ask one who is.

Thanks Kevin :) It costs 3 euro for an adult and 2 euro for a child.

I actually use air abrasive methods and I also asked an expert about his thoughts on the fish prep. He gave me some useful tips and I think if I would be satisfied with my prep tools I would try it but at the moment I have some problems with them ...

Here is another update on my bone prep:

A rib salad :)

5.JPG.c128cfdf049b672f8ba21038ca5e1d24.JPG

Prepped about 4 or 5 hours until now and I some progress is visible. Still have to do much fine prep work ...

Nice teeth.

Looks like the bone plate is going to be a good one.

Thanks Tony :) I am really happy that I found this plate and the other one. Such finds are not common there so the year is starting good for me!

I forgot to say that I have two associated pieces for the piece with the ribs and I managed to prep them a bit recently. I ran into some surprises :ighappy:

Firstly I found an Ichthyosaur paddle bone:

Paddelknochen2(5Stunden).thumb.JPG.0105c3b3c857b13ebae568173625e128.JPG

paddelknochen1.JPG.02a61080e91522d5b0d9cac19b2d2056.JPG

Not completely finished until now but I already did some work...

The other surprise are two Steneosaurus (crocodile). One of them is pretty small but the other one could be the largest one I ever found...

Here are some pictures:

steneozahn2.JPG.3c67e474a80da3d232f05ea41676fe3e.JPG

steneozahn.JPG.c8b8a19f8e79ddd489b03eb279625b91.JPG

I didn't finish this one because I need to do some hard work on the plate to prep the ribs and I don't want to damage it. It's about 2.5 cm long and I think my biggest one is about 2.6 cm! Normally that are about 1 or 2 cm long but bigger ones are very rare!

And some more progress in the ribs:
