I also took the opportunity to buy a couple of fossils that were from the Fezouata Formation from near Zagora as i knew we wouldn't be going too near there this time out.

Here are a couple of what I think may be Asaphellus trilobites. Still need a bit of prepping, i think. And research as I think similar trilobites like Lehua sp. are found here and I've not done much reading yet.

Thanks, Tim! :)

It was so lovely to be out in the field again and it's great fun posting these reports too.

Here are some close ups of one of those 'Asaphellus' .

Oh.

is that good or bad?

I don' t mean to be rude, but how is it C. walteri, when i can't find a listing for it here.

I read this.:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/324248737_The_world-famous_Devonian_mudmounds_at_Hamar_Laghdad_and_overlying_cephalopod-rich_strata

Why not C. hamlagdadicus?

The correct spelling is C. hamlagdadicum Alberti 1981, but in any event, C. hamlagdadicum does not have glabellar spines as are evident on your specimen.

Thank you very much for finding that. :)

The Fezouata one above - Asaphellus fezouataensis ?

Sorry about the spelling, but the article I linked spelt it that way, it's confusing enough with all the name changes and new species without papers getting them wrong as well. :headscratch:

Yes, I was only pointing out the error in the linked paper.  Because they are very weathered, I would call them Asaphellus sp.

I also bought this one from the Lower Ordovician Fezoauta formation. Nice little nodule containing a specimen of the Rhombiferan cystoid Macrocystella bohemica.

Great thread Adam...very interesting to see and hear about some of the geology and the paleo of things that many of us have at home and see in the shops/shows all of the time. Seeing that large ammo outside the shop and seeing you note it as fake makes me chuckle as I bought a much much smaller one online years ago and when it arrived and I had it in hand I could see the artistry/chisel marks used in its preparation... I still find it very interesting....

Thanks for all the photos/info. good stuff.

Regards, Chris

Very glad you're enjoying it, Chris :)

This is the end of this section, but my next thread will be about the prepping workshops and retail outlets in Erfoud town itself, where a large percentage of the Moroccan fossils for sale pass through.

Cheers,

So interesting!!! Thanks for showing all your wonderful finds and buys!

Definitely a nice read, and it surely does make me want to go out myself too (tomorrow I finally will!).

I think my favorite of your finds is that big gastropod. What an absolute beauty! I hope you can get an ID on it! It's probably from the Trochida, but I can't give you more than that...

The gastropod is indeed a beauty, I will hopefully get around to the id when I get around to doing Adam's Lower Carboniferous in about 2024!

Good luck tomorrow. :fingerscrossed:

What an amazing thread, thanks so much for sharing. I visited Erfoud back in 1968, long before my interest in fossils. It was than a remote location and when we were in the souk, we were the only Europeans in town. How do you get all your finds and purchases back? Then we found shipping to be chancy, in that some things arrived home and others didn’t. You certainly were transporting serious weight. Tom

Thank you for your kind words. :)

We'd gone down there in a car.

I love in Morocco, so we drove back from Marrakech to Fes along the coast to Casablanca and then east to home, thus avoiding the mountains.

Only 6 hours. :D

  • 2 months later...

Any chance of a pic of that Scyphocrinites now, Adam? The good one you found but couldn't get a pic of at the time?

Just reviewing your string of threads (how's that for a metaphor?) and noticed it is still missing.
