Help identifying cool fossil

Hey! I found this fossil in southwestern Ohio, I don't know which period it is from but as you can tell there are quite a few shells and coral embedded around it. I don't know much about fossils but my guess is it's part of the head or rear of a trilobite? I estimate it's about 3/4 inch in length. I also noticed there's another one embedded deeper to the right of it. I honestly have no idea about this one, can any of you help me out? Thanks :D

You're very welcome!

I'm thinking that it might be a Flexicalymene, but I'm not sure - @piranha, @Kane, and others will be able to identify it with confidence :)

Interesting. And another smaller one of the same type to the right of it, no?  Nice chunk of inhabited matrix. Good for you.

Nice find! :)

I think Monica is correct and that these are cephalons of Flexicalymene.

Yes, it is the trilobite Flexicalymene, actually thee are two right next to each other.  You also have some bryozoans (not coral) on there (the forked stick like thing) and it looks like a gastropod (snail) buried just to the left of the trilobites.  Your rock is Ordovician in age.

  • 3 weeks later...

Lots of goodies there. Should be some good prepping practice. Nice plate.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
