Ludwigia
On the way back home we stopped at the side of the road every once in a while so that Sara could have a good view of the local scenery. Steep cliffs where rock climbers like to play and haughty castles on the rocks. That's the Danube in the first photo. We're not all that far away from the source here, so it's not quite as wide as it is in Vienna. That last one is now a youth hostel if you ever think of coming here for a holiday. So that's enough for today. We are now going to get a good night's sleep and tomorrow we shall probably be getting down to tackling the prep. 1 9 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
I've already mentioned in other posts how easily and quickly the preparation can go with material from this site, and so was the case again today. Of course Sara had to make sure that the instruments were all in good order. And I managed with Sara's help to get all of the finds more or less freed up from the matrix with the stylus. Sara even told me after inspection that I did a good job We were even able to take a couple of breaks to watch the ice hockey world championship semi-finals. Canada beat the USA. Yay! Finland beat Germany. Boo! Now we're both looking forward to grown men chasing a piece of rubber over the ice in the finals tomorrow. Oh yes, I'll also hopefully find the time to abrade the finds and finish them off. 1 8 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
We didn't quite get the things finished today. Abrading always takes a bit longer. And besides, we had to watch the ice hockey world championship finals. Canada against Finland. Guess who won? Sara couldn't believe how many bearded Finnish grown-up men were crying on the ice. 1 4 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
We got back to business today and finished off the finds. Sara and I decided that she would take along some of the smaller ammonites as well as the shark teeth when she continues her travels. The time to move on is drawing nigh, so I'll be giving the next in line, @Scylla a heads up. Here are the finished products. 5 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
Now we can let the cat out of the bag. As you've probably noticed, Sara was very active during her entire stay here, but she did manage to sit still for about a half an hour each day so that I could draw her portrait. We just wound up the sittings yesterday, so now we can show it. PS. Tim has improved the original, so I've just added his version. 1 10 2 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Sara was pretty excited and jumped right onto the saddle. I gave her an overview of the site once we had arrived and she chose a place to dig where it looked promising. Sure enough, it didn't take all that long before she found her first tooth. Here's our haul from that spot after about an hour. The pickings were starting to get meager there, but then Sara noticed another place for us to try our luck. And sure enough, these all came out within a half an hour. By then, Sara was itching to get back onto the bike, so off we went and then rinsed off the teeth as soon as we got back home. We had a short discussion and Sara agreed to take these teeth along with her on her travels. If the weather holds up tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Danube Valley. If only I had known Sara was such a talented shark tooth hunter lol Fantastic photos and updates. 1
Ludwigia
Does anybody know what's up with Scylla or have regular contact with him? He still hasn't replied with his address although I sent him a PM and tagged him twice. In the meantime, Sara and I have been relaxing around the house. Yesterday we spent some time in the vegetable and fruit garden. And today we took a stroll downtown to the lakefront. Überlingen is one of the oldest free towns in Germany dating back to the 7th century or earlier. People love to come here for holidays. We have a nice view over the lake, a lovely waterfront promenade, interesting statues and a quaint market place. The provincial garden exhibition is taking place here right now, so we saw lots of flowerbeds. Sara wanted to go for a boat tour, but we unfortunately didn't have the time for that. 1 4 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
Well, we're still waiting to hear back from Scylla. I think that I'll be getting in touch with @Praefectus tomorrow, who is the next in line. Anyway, we've been keeping active and went for a bike tour today. Sara was at the controls this time. First we drove by the golf links, watched them slugging their way to the 18th hole and had a good view from up there over the lake. Then we stopped along the way to observe some bovines, or should I say, they observed us. That guy in the last photo shows why they are called water buffalo. There are also a few natural monuments in our area caused by the workings of the glaciers, which formed the present landscape here during the last ice age. I just couldn't resist showing Sara the glacial mill on the way back home. 1 9 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Ludwigia
Praefectus already responded to my tag, so Sara shall be continuing her journies as of tomorrow. Please do wish her a pleasant journey, since it shall probably take a few weeks before she arrives at her next destination. 1 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance.
