A couple of my "Cheap" Purchases from the 2019 MAPS Show

The last thing that I needed was anymore fossils, but every once in a while I will by things for me or for other Fossil Forum members that I think would enjoy a certain piece(s).

I did buy several things for one member and a couple for another member, but I will not post those, I am going to post a couple things that I got for myself, and these were very cheap and stuff that I really liked, her are a few examples.

First up is a beautiful Mazon Creek Pecopteris piece. It is rare for me to buy anything from Mazon Creek since I collect it and have a lot, but this was a very pretty piece, at least to me, and at $25.00 I took it.

IMG_9548.thumb.jpg.69e26f19ba3d5a9274a2bab9b2ff96d1.jpg

The next items I picked up at the Hotel Show and they were from an older collector who sent several beer flats of fossils with a friend to sell since he was moving and could not take the stuff with him. When I opened this beer flat, I saw 2 Miocene Ecphora shells along with other items (all identified as coming from the Yorktown and Pungo River Formation, Aurora, NC) and since it was priced at $5.00, I could not pass it up. Besides the Ecphora, look at what other items were contained in the flat.

This next box which was in the same room I picked up for $30.00. It contained various water tumbled bones which I did not want, but I saw a couple items that were nice and one that was very intriguing (croc jaw, whale teeth) and I thought might be Dinosaurian. I sent pics of it to @Troodon and Frank identified it as ceratopsian dentary, I looked it up and I would agree that it is a perfect match.

I also picked up 4 other beer flats from the same room that were priced between $1 and $2 per flat. I had to get these because they were filled with various fossils from the Conasauga Formation from Georgia and Alabama. If you have seen any of my posts on the trilobites from the Conasauga Formation of Murray County Georgia, you know that I collect a lot of this stuff, the difference her is that these pieces are from Floyd County, Georgia and Cherokee County, Alabama. These pieces are totally different in species and matrix than I am used to collecting.

Here are some pieces of shale from Floyd County, Georgia- these contain a lot more agnostid trilobites than I find at the Murray County Site.

@MeargleSchmeargl you might be interested in this post.

These are also from the Floyd County location, but these fossils are found in nodules.

I believe that the vast majority, if not all of these trilobites are Elrathia antiquata.

Here are some other odd things from the Floyd County location and I am waiting for some confirmation from Dr. David Schwimmer who is the expert on this material.

First up what has been called Brooksella, a sponge, but I think that is open for debate, either way I always wanted some.

IMG_9517.jpg.d3b9a654c94a4a331c1953491c4100db.jpgIMG_9516.jpg.36bfcb5ea8e64b4739aab552873a4109.jpg

IMG_9515.jpg.340bd576e31c55d4d836638c8e31c090.jpg

Next are what have been identified as Hyolithids-

IMG_9513.jpg.95c181aa0f86eaf2692d10981d7fdea1.jpgIMG_9519.jpg.7c30e209d3307aa86b39134ab63d832b.jpgIMG_9518.jpg.3f938a2d2b7f39a7e14182b20c22ad22.jpgIMG_9520.jpg.e68c7e766c9e396ecaa4b4d6dad0659a.jpgIMG_9521.jpg.5decc7746070d7616489dcd72c9671c4.jpgIMG_9536.jpg.fd5f2d268eecd929736d0b2ef84ff86a.jpg

I believe that this may be a colony of Chlorophytes-

IMG_9524.jpg.a757a5895750d85d1f951b2b32c7b99a.jpg

And the last piece from Floyd County is a piece that appears to be calcareous sponges close to Eiffelia globosa.

Excellent specimens! :)

And i'm very glad that you acquired some nice pieces for your own collection and not just stuff for other people.

I don't know what half that first lot is, but the Cambrian stuff is delightful, lots of amazing trilobites and i adore the hyolithids

I really think you got some great bargains!

In this same room, I also bought 1 beer flat for $10, of matrix from the Lower Cambrian / Pioche Shale from Pioche, Nevada, the seller then gave me a second flat for free. The matrix contained trilobites that are I believe are Olenellus gilberti and Olenellus chiefensis. I feel that this was a great buy and I was happy with these.

Here are a couple more things that I bought 3 flats of Silurian Holocystities scutellatus cystoids from the Niagaran Formation / Osgood Shale of Napoleon, Indiana for a total of $10.00.

And I was given this lot of matrix for $2.00 from LaPaz, Bolivia that is supposed to contain trilobites.

Those Pioche shale trilobites are amazing and you probably couldn't get any one of them for the price you paid for the lot! :SlapHands:

Amazing.

But I really love the cystoids.:D

Kinda super bummed that I didn't go this year now... I wouldn't have been able to drive back with all of the flats I would've bought. Those trilobite scores are killer!

Thanks and I am glad that I had room.

A lot of absolutely lovely trilos, and I'm especially interested in the Conasauga ones from Floyd. Just about everyone and their mother knows about the Murray place now, and while I've heard about/seen some of the stuff that comes from Floyd, I haven't heard of any collecting spots for those localities.

Also interested in that Pecopteris (because me want :P). Hear about plant sites in Appalachian plateau, but not any specific locations, and I'm dying to get my hands on some of that veggie goodness from the Pennsylvanian.

PMs on Floyd sites and plant sites? :D

Every single fossil you see is a miracle set in stone, and should be treated as such.

I was going to say the same thing but I guess it's obvious! I've seen the prices and haven't managed to score one of those for myself yet.

And he threw in the 2nd flat for free?? Maybe he was unaware...

What you have here is a section of fossil shark cartilage. Lots of nice stuff in all of your posts about the show. I'd love to go sometime, but I'd blow my budget in about 5 minutes.

I am with you on that, the vast majority of fossils at the show were nice to look at, but were not items that I collect. I really like to collect my own stuff, but will buy something if I like it or if Isee something that someone else might like. If you lived closer it would be great for you to go there with some of your crabs, they were under represented, as I believe there were only 5 or 6 for sale.
