30-03-2019 cretaceous fieldtrip in Northern France

This saturday the tides were ideal for a whole day of prospection at the foot of the chalk cliffs near Calais.

We got there early in the morning when the water was going away from the cliffs. At the parking we were greeted by a veteran collector from this location, he took us along to the northern part of the site in search of big Turonian ammonites. A first for us since we've only collected more to the south in the cenomanian deposits.

With his help we did find a couple of ammonites including a big specimen.

around 1pm after lunch we parted ways and we went to the southern part of the site in search of cenomanian fossils, most of the beach was covered in sand, making it harder to find some decent boulders on the beach to break open.

but the usual Schloenbachia and Mantelliceras ammonites did show up.

we ended the day with dinner in a local tavern before heading back home whit a new load of fossils to clean and prepp.

A Lewisceras Ammonite:

A large Ammonite, I still have to prepp and Id it propperly:

the extraction of the large ammonite:

A nice find from Natalie:

under the sand on the beach Albian deposits are present, but not visible, from time to time som fossils from those banks are washed out deeper in the sea and  washed ashore.

She found a nice Hoplites ammonite lying around on the beach:

Fantastic fossils and lovely scenery! Those cliffs look like ammonite heaven. Are there any Coniacian deposits accessible along the cliffs?

Thx, the Coniacian is not present in the cliffs, but I think there is some more land inwards with fossil echinoids. But it is not accesible, only if you get lucky onca construction site.

For variety, I'd find it worth the price of plane tickets just to hunt one good day in an environment like that.  Wonderful finds.

Thx :) Belgium and the North of France are well worth a visit, not only for the variety in geology, but also the local food and drinks ;)

we prepped the big one, it hasn't the best preservation. still a decent ammonite:

and an other item we found on the beach:

not a fossil this time, but a WWII relic, this coastline is full of remains of the " atlantic wall" so we do find some traces of this from time to time:

I agree that it's a Leptostyrax.  It is an Albian-Cenomanian genus with rather long root lobes with cusplets that start low on the lobes and are rather long.  They are also a little in front of the crown rather than to the sides.  Nice one.

Another great day hunting and in a beautiful location as well.  Nice prep work.  The WWII shell is also a neat find, have you found many of these?
