Brittle star fossil, genuine or carved?

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I saw this brittle star fossil up for sale, and wanted to check if it was genuine. It says it is from Morocco, and from the Ordovician period. I know a lot of sea stars and brittle stars coming out of Morocco are carved. I am not as educated on echinoderm fossils as much as others. I've included pictures. What do you all think? Thank you!

I am no echinoderm expert either, but it doesn't really looked "carved" to me. There seems to be a strong carbonized imprint of the disk and arms. The preparation doesn't look to be all that bad either, and seems like a quality specimen of some Ordovician Ophiuroids :D I would say that if you like the piece (and its a reasonable price) then go for it!

They look real to me.

There are indeed lots of fake ones about, but they're usually pretty obvious.
