Fossil or just a rock?

Recommended Posts

I found this at an Alabama creek recently, among Cretaceous marine fossil deposits.

I can't figure out if it is a fossil or not.

The scale is in cm.

Two pictures of the top, third one of the bottom.

What do you think?  :zzzzscratchchin:

Agreed, the shapes and textures do seem to fit.

I think you can write that down in ink.

I don't think my pen would write on the screen, but if I turn around I see the pit shape in a moose atlas vert..  I've got a dolphin vert. that has the parallel ridges in a box over the kitchen cabinet, and the bone texture is from the hadrosaur vert. in a draw,  the divergent ridges just above the bone texture I'm sure I have in fish verts. from boxes all over the place.

Well, excellent, I am glad I did find a fossil!

So, probably a fish, or impossible to tell?

I seriously doubt it is from a fish. Some characteristics may be conserved from when vertebrates were all fish though.
