I was wondering if this might be a plant fossil, or is it an imposter?

Found in Kosciusko County, Indiana.
Silurian? Devonian?

Planolites I believe.

Edit: Just checked the spelling and noticed that Chondrites is a better fit.

What you have there is probably the ichnofossil Chondrites.

One of the indications that contradict it's being a plant is the lack of a consistent tapering from would be trunk to the tip of  the branches.

Just realized that my houseplant euphorbia trigona violates that rule all to pieces.

Prickly Pear and other cacti also.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
