Perth/WA hunting trip

Timbo

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

I've looking at a trip around the Perth Australia area hunting for fossils - My mate and our kids would love to spend a day digging and sifting looking for some fossils (although I suspect my kids will lose interest in 10 minutes)

I've heard of the area around mole cap hill but I'm unsure where to start - If anyone is planning a trip I've love to tag along and get the gist of it all as I'm unsure where to start.

Hello, Timbo!

I can't help, I'm sorry to say, but just wanted to wish you a warm welcome to TFF from Morocco. :)

  • 4 weeks later...

So I went out for the first time and hit an area in the gin gin chalk layer - And I found some stuff!!!

From top to bottom: - mollusc shell, sea urchin spine, small ammonite shell and I think a sea worm of some kind?

The ammonite came out really well

And after lots of careful cleaning...

Not much I know but I'm stoked I found anything at all. I've refined my method of extraction a lot since getting this, I'm planning another trip for next weekend. Really keen to find that shark tooth!

I can only see the first photo you posted, looks like the following two failed to embed.

I took the kids out today, they were actually pretty helpful for a 4yo and 7yo. I think it was a pretty amazing trip as we found a shark tooth in the first 15 minutes!

I'm not sure what the other bone beside it is, maybe some kind of grinding plate?

Looks like a heterodontus shark tooth, need better pictures from multiple angles to be sure.

Also, I do not know the size of that coin, please include a ruler for size reference.

I was thinking maybe sting ray? Here's a photo of the underside, I think that line of white dots is little grinding "teeth". I gently brushed with water and all the chalky stone came away but those little teeth are definitely part of it.

Sorry I don't have anything for scale! I'll need to buy something
