Hello all,

I was at my local rock shop and I noticed there was a Triceratops jaw for sale. I am curious about if it is genuine or if it has any repairs. The teeth look like they were inserted. I don't see myself buying it, but I would like to know what other forum members think about the jaw.

Sorry I don't have any better photos. It was behind a glass case.

Teeth are indeed inserted, and in a pretty bad way. Normally Triceratops teeth form uninterrupted line of teeth. (Picture from the internet below). Here they are just randomly inserted. Jawbone itself seems to be real.

Wow thats a new one on me.  Have never seen anyone place worn spitter teeth on one and backwards no less, pretty bad.  Its also should be identified as Ceratopsian no way to prove its from a Triceratops.

Here is what the lingual side should look like....its a battery of teeth.

It does look like a ceratopsid right dentary. I think it should be identifiable though since it's fairly complete and there is quite a bit of variation in the faces of ceratopsids. I think it's probably a case of finding the right reference photos.

Those teeth are indeed badly placed and don't belong there. Such a shame too because otherwise it looks like a very nice ceratopsid dentary. All the original teeth seem to have gone.

There also seems to be some crushing. The coronoid process is damaged and the jaw seems too slender in places, probably due to said crushing or other damage.

There are also some locations where either Torosaurus or Triceratops is not found. Though this might just be due to sampling bias. And Torosaurus could of course still turn out to be adult Triceratops.
