Another Day of Ordovician Collecting in Lawrenceburg, Indiana- Picture Heavy

Nimravis

Recommended Posts

Today I was out collecting in Lawrenceburg, Indiana for several hours, accompanying me was some rainfall. This will be a picture heavy post and I will show various fossils that I found and many pieces that I left in the field.

I will start out with trilobite parts of Flexicalymene and Isotelus.  I did find my first ever complete trilobite, at least I think it is my first, and also my largest piece of an Isotelus  that I have ever found.

Now the pieces-

Bryozoan-

Here are some pics of bryozoan that I found and  almost all were left in the field.

Very cool looking finds there. Thanks for sharing. I would have kept some of the bryozoans. The crinoid hash plates were extremely cool. All of these are getting me excited about my upcoming trip to Indiana and Kentucky in two weeks. Congratulations.

I kept a couple- the rest were too big and some slabs were really big.

That is what I was thinking, I always hope that I will come across a large complete or near complete one.

Wow, that’s a lot of crinoids! Are they just small pockets or is there a layer just chock-full like that?

Each dot is 50,000,000 years:

Hadean............Archean..............................Proterozoic.......................................Phanerozoic...........

Every once in a while I come across a thin layer like that, it is never large. I really do like those pieces.

Congrats on your first complete trilo, Ralph!  It's a very nice Flexicalymene roller! :dinothumb::trilosurprise:

Excellent finds and pictures, thank you for sharing. That Isotelus piece is a whopper, and those bryozoans are fascinating- I have only ever found little fragments where I've collected, so it is cool to see something more representative of their structure in life.

Very cool!  I need to get back there.  It's been 4 years since I've been down that way.  Did you stop at the spillway?

Cheers,

Rich

That site is a fossil cornucopia. Almost any one of those brach/bryo/crinoid pieces would be standout specimens in my drawers and worth the effort but for you they are leavers?? :default_faint:

I thought you would be familiar with the movie "Jaws" -- you know the part where he says: "We're gonna need a bigger boat". Time to buy that extended cargo van perhaps?

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

I love just looking at pictures. You sure do have a good choice at that site!

Correct, there are fossils everywhere and I was looking for smaller pieces but always hope for a monster size Isotelus , but so far no luck.

Some are too big and others I am just not interested in, but do take pictures of some. There were so many pieces that I did not take pictures of, it is a real cornucopia as you say.
