Peace River Fossil with pattern?

FloridaSon

Recommended Posts

Hello all, on a recent trip to the Peace river, I found this. It has what appears to be a pattern all over it, even in one of the grooves. Any ideas?

Thanks and best regardsIMG_0010.thumb.jpeg.839d7500224b74ed3a6bff9386ebc0a7.jpeg

Might be turtle, though the pattern is different from the ones I have seen in the past.

Curious... The shape and size seems to scream vertebrae... The pattern is unknown to me.  Sort of reminds me of the sutures on ammonites. That's crazy.. Time to bring in some experts... @Harry Pristis@PrehistoricFlorida@Plantguy@jcbshark@digit@Brett Breakin' Rocks

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Bio-eroded dugong bone

I was looking at this earlier and wondering the same.  Is it a heavily eroded Dugong rib bone showing (slowly peeling back) the dense growth rings.   Maybe a better shot of the cross-section that is currently hidden in shadow ?

I agree. I think Tony might have it with the worn dugong fragment....here's an end shot of a bone piece I polished awhile back for comparison to compare to that 1st photo. I could envision it possibly breaking down similarly....but additional views/closeups make prove/disprove.

Yeah .. I think we are looking at that cross section and seeing potentially the same patterns ...

PS Edit: It is so cool to see a nice polish on those bones ..... !
