Virginia Miocene Fossil Collecting Trip

Hello everyone! I have not posted in a while because I have not been on any trips recently. However, I just recently had the opportunity to go on a Fossil collecting tour in a Miocene exposure in VA. I was able  to meet the helpful and friendly @SailingAlongToo (thanks to him I was able to learn about this fantastic opportunity). My mom, dad, and best friend spent Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 collecting fossils along a river. On Saturday, my mom found a killer posterior meg using a kitty litter scooper in a gravel bar after not finding anything for 1.5 hours. I found two crocodile teeth and some hastalis teeth around 1.5 inches. My best friend found some hastalis teeth, and my dad found a large “cookie” Fossil of a vertebra I believe. On Sunday mom found some nice hemis and an item that could not be readily identified. I found half of a juvenile meg and a posterior meg tooth. My dad found a larger gator tooth, and my best friend also found some hemis. Here are some pictures, thanks for reading!

The "cookie" is a vertebral epiphysis.

Waving hello to you, as I was on the fossil tour as well! I was near your mom when she found her meg the first day, and I've been telling people never underestimate what you can do with a plastic kitty litter scoop! I also remember when you found your meg as well! A great day hunting for your family!

I was also on the boat ride back (woman in the neon yellow shirt) near the end of the second day, and I got a look at the strange fossil your mom found. I'm super curious as to what it might be. If you hear back, please do post here!

Again, congratulations, and so wonderful to hear about your trip on here!

Nice to see you here! Thank you for driving the boat back and forth! At one point, three teeth washed up in your waves!

I hope to see you on future tours!

Strange fossil?  Post a picture here or in the ID section.  Someone will have an idea.

@hokiehunter that’s a good idea, but I actually do not have the fossil. It was left behind at Stratford to be analyzed by a paleontologist to determine its identification and potential scientific value.
