That Odd Theropod Tooth

Recommended Posts

Omnomosaurus

So the odd Kem Kem tooth I bought online arrived today.

It does have a bit of a funky shape to it.

• Chunky with a recurve.

• Oval cross section.

• Mesial carina naturally extends only to 1/2 way down the mesial face.

• Distal carina reaches cervix.

• No wrinkled enamel.

• No obvious interdental succuli.

Denticle count at midline -

Mesial: 13/5mm

Distal: 10/5mm

Thanks! :D It looked so unusual, and @Troodon thought it looked like a good buy, so I had to snap it up.

Carcharodontosaurus maybe?

I'm leaning towards Carcharodontosaurid (with my limited knowledge haha), mainly because of the denticles and how chunky dentary teeth can be.

But the profile of the tooth and the short mesial carina are very different from any Carch teeth I've seen in the past though.

Another interesting tooth,  good to have.  Yes it could be an anterior Carch but I have not see one with the mesial carina ending so high so not sure what to say.  The denticles work for Carch but nothing is published on their positional teeth so its indeterminate in my mind.

Thanks as always, Troodon! I'll label this one Theropod indet and hope that something/anything gets published in the near future.

Denticle comparison (distal) with probable Carcharodontosaurid indet. anterior dentary tooth of approx same size.

(Left)

Theropod indet crown height = 36.5mm

(Right)

Carch. indet crown height = 37.5mm
