UPDATED WITH PICTURES FROM THE SHOW

For those of you in or near the Western Suburbs of Chicago this weekend, you should try and stop by the Kane County Fairgrounds located at 525 S. Randall Road in St. Charles, Illinois. The 43rd Chicagoland Gem, Mineral And Fossil Show will take place on Saturday (10a-6p) and Sunday (10a-5p). This is a really great and large show and I am sure you would find something that would interest you.

For pics from last years show check out a post of mine from 5-26-18 titled CGMA (Chicago Gem–Mineral Association) 42nd Annual Show.

If you can’t make it, I will most likely be posting pictures of the show later Saturday evening.

I got back from the show a couple hours ago and I wanted to post some pictures of the overall show, pictures of some of the available fossils that were offered for sale, displays and a couple things that I bought.

Like many other shows they have door prizes, blind auctions every 1/2 hour, a Kids Corner, displays and food that can be purchased.

The show seemed a little smaller to me this year, but still had a lot of fun.

Here is the first post it will take me a few to get all of the pictures posted.

This next piece is supposed to be a baby Ichthyosaur from China- the dealer said it had repairs to the tail.

I am going to be with my grandson tomorrow, so we are going to whack open geodes.

I bought this Fossil which the dealer stated came from an old collection because it looked familiar and the the old label on the back seemed to make me pretty sure of the location. The label stated that it was Permian and from New Mexico. I have another piece that looks somewhat similar and I received from my fossil mentor a long time ago. He used to Winter in Las Cruces, Ne Mexico and he would fossil collect with various clubs that he belonged too. The first pic is the piece that he gave me that must have been collected about 30-35 years ago and it is Permian and from the Robledo Mountains. This site is now a National Monument (2009) and no collecting is allowed. He also gave me the attached booklet that he had about the tetrapods trackways from the Robledo Mountains.

Here is the piece I bought today- he wanted $95 for it, but I got it for $75.

There are 5 nice tetrapods prints and 4 partials and the center grove is from the tail. I believe there are other trace fossils on this piece and maybe a couple raindrops.

I really do like this piece.

@stats Rich you should try to make this show if you are around. I did see your friend Andrew there and Jack @fiddlehead.

I really wish you would get in the habit of taking some pictures when you go to these shows. :default_faint:

I note some of the prices on some very common fossils are way high while others for more rare items are fairly reasonable. I guess it's just the vendors.

Nice! I was there from 1:30 to about 3ish this afternoon.

(I think my favorite thing I saw were Knightia that had been painted on/enhanced... KNIGHTIA) anyways

I picked up this nice little (not too little actually) trilo, Isotelus iowensis! I thought it was pretty nice for the price as I’d never even seen them before!

Chances are I’ll end up there again tomorrow morning...

I agree Doren, I need to take more pictures, I will try next time. Regarding the prices, you are correct, the dealer that I bought the trackways from had a very poor upper skull of an  Merycoidodon Oreodont for $395.00, way too much for that piece. There is another dealer that I have seen at least 5 times within the last two years and he still has the majority of the same items. Things have to be priced at what someone is willing to pay for it and when they don't sell over an extended period of time, you have to drop the price. Now if the dealer today would not have budged on the price of the trackways, I would have paid the $95.00 without a problem- I knew I wanted that piece.

There was a kindly old man that used to set up at the local show (I saw him for 10 + years).

He had very high prices and few sales. I asked him about this once and his reply was " I do this so I can socialize and do not care if I sell anything at all."

You just never know what someone's motivations are.

So true Tony- this dealer is younger and I think he wants sales lol.

Last night I sent an e-mail to Dr. Spencer Lucas from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Dr. Lucas has put out numerous papers on the Permian of New Mexico. I wanted to get an ID on the below trackway that I bought yesterday. He did get back to me today and stated that the tracks were made by a Batrachichnus. These were salamander-like amphibians that lived about 280 million years ago in the Permian.

They are nicely detailed track impressions which I am sure helped with the proper ID.

Yes and a lot of his research and papers were on the Permian trackways in New Mexico.

I made it a little later in the afternoon, about 2:30.  Andrew said he had a good conversation with you.  Sorry, I missed you!
