Crab prep finished(for now)

Fossilis Willis

Recommended Posts

I recently finished this pulalius vulgaris and wanted to show it off. I may work on it more in the future when I get an air abrasive set up, but for now I'm pretty happy with it. It turned out well considering when I dug it out of the bank it rolled down the hill in two pieces. It was my first major repair and I have only prepped 7 or 8 of these. I think the practice is starting to pay off, but having a cooperative crab goes a long way. I know it's nowhere near  the level of skill you see elsewhere on the forum, but I'm pretty dang proud of this one.

Hey Fossilis Willis.   I'd say you did a purty dang good job.  Its got just everything you want in a fossil crab.  Carapace, both claws, good rear end and 5 legs.   There is a way to make that broken part in the rock disapear.  Message me.

Good prep job!

Great fossil!  :)

I took the liberty of editing your photos.

Darkened and cropped the photos a bit.

Looks even better now. :)

All it's missing are some tippys. You can't tell from the pics, but it's actually a six legger. The right side has all four legs, but the middle two are stacked on top of each other. Also there appears to be in tact eye stalks.

Thank you, that's quite the improvement. Feel free to do the same to the low quality pics I just posted for the rolling auction.:thumbsu:

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. Maybe with a little more practice I will have a shot at IPFOTM. I think I put about 20-25 hours into this guy. All the work was done with my CP-9361. I used PB 1500 to glue the two pieces back together, as there was some weathering and the fit wasn't tight in some spots. You can see weathering resulted a ''tan line'' effect on the carapace, which I acutally kind of like.

Thanks. I had fun with this one. I don't know how these compare to the tumidos in terms of difficulty, as I have to work one. But this particular Pulalius Vulgarus seemed more willing than most to come out of the matrix voluntarily. Those tumidos seem like they can put up a fight.

Very good prep! I have 2 questions: 1. Do you have some tool to make the matrix the same level? 2. Are the crab conretions from the same well-known place or randomly found?

All the smoothing/shaping of the rock was done with my airscribe and a lot of patience. As far as location, it's from the Lincoln Creek formation of southwest Washington state.

@Fossilis Willis yeah the NZ crabs can be tough but also not too bad. It really depends on the matrix and how sticky the nodule is.

Do or do not. There is no try. - Yoda
