Reece
I recently stumbled across a piece of shale and it looked like there might be a carboniferous fern fossilized in it. I am not sure so I would like someone with a more trained eye to weigh in and let me know if this is actually a fern or just a mark in the shale. Ludwigia
I don't see anything there but shale. Can you please indicate exactly where on that stone you think you see a fern fossil. Kane
The shale pattern is just that: a shale pattern. A fern fossil would show more distinguished characteristics and symmetry, which this piece unfortunately lacks. That being said, there may be a silver lining to this piece, at least insofar as you might consider splitting it open with a chance of finding a fossil inside. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
Fossildude19
The ferns from the Rhode Island Formation are quite easily recognized. Have a look at Forum member BGuild's album of Ferns and plants from the Carboniferous of Rhode Island. Good luck. Mark Kmiecik
Could you post a photo of the other side, please? Mark. Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
