Hardtimehermit
I found this 6 inch stick in a wash in central Nevada. I was in a area outside of Gabbs where petrified wood is found. The stick is only 3/4 of an inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. One tip looks burnt by fire and leads me to wonder if this could have been a cave man's fire stick. Has anyone seen petrified wood like this? Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Looks more like mineral staining, to me. If it were burnt, I would expect the inside to be black as well. Still a neat piece, however. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." caldigger
Since your "burn mark" is only on the very outer surface I would be more inclined to think it to be a mineral staining. Besides no cavemen in Nevada...too hot! *Apparently Tim posted as I was writing.

The piece looks like typical petrified wood (which takes much longer to petrify than 15 thousand years.) I agree that the black is mineral coloring, not from burning. They were usually playing in the Caravan Lounge at the Sands Hotel after 9pm.
