Baltic Sea coast fossil hunting

This weekend I went again to the Baltic Sea coast. This time my target were Miocene deposits of lignite in the cliffs around Chłapowo. This is one of the cliffs I climbed in vain:

because the only thing I found has nothing to do with Miocene :) - it is a piece of a crinoid stem, so most probably Silurian.

However when I went in the opposite direction, I found the remains of an old lignite mine

and there, among the pieces of lignite I found these beautiful cones:

At least you got in a good workout climbing that hillside. ;)

The next day the hunt continued in Jastrzębia Góra. At the end of the Fox Ravine there are plenty of Silurian rocks to browse:

Great find with those cones and the climbing is good for your health.

Thanks :) I only wish the climbing had yielded better fruits :P

Well, this looked very unpromising to begin with, but then the cones and wood and all the Silurian goodies more than made up for it! :)

Thanks for sharing.

Very true - I was delighted to find the cones, though they are extremely fragile and it's difficult to even pick them up without breaking. A few broke during transport :(

Nice trip report and beautiful place.

Thanks :) It's not high season yet, so it was not crowded - in 2 weeks it will not be possible to hunt there anymore :)

Very nice cones! I’m sure you can stabilize them with something. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks :) I don't want to ruin them trying - they are just safely placed in cotton wool, hopefully it will prevent any further damage.

Do you know the age of the cones, or what kind of tree?

This is Miocene, and the cones are from a pine tree - Pinus sp (the longer ones) and Pinus brevis (the shorter). I enrolled them for a fossil of the month contest :)
