Is this fossil Wood? If so any idea on possible species?

Is this fossil wood if so, any possible Id on species? This comes from the Carboniferous coal deposit on seaham's blast beach

hmmm I'm going with this being a suggestive rock. Wood as we know it today didn't exist during the Carboniferous period. You'd be looking for Lycopods if this is from the Carboniferous period. I'm not seeing the usual uniform look that Lepidodendron or Sigillaria would have.

It's definitely Carboniferous plant "bark", maybe not well preserved enough to put a name to but it could be a Lepidodendron

I agree, the carbonized portions speak to me of plant origin. 

Decortication could explain the lack of identifying characteristics.
