Interesting Yorktown Bivalve

Recommended Posts

I found this bivalve in a clump of matrix that was attached to one of my other finds on a recent trip to the Tar River with @MikeR and @AshHendrick

I have never found one of these before nor seen one. Pliocene Yorktown Formation Rushmere Member.

My best guess on this one is Pododesmus sp.

It is 1.53 inch long (39 mm) and 1.42 inch wide (36.3 mm)

Hi Don

I believe you are right.  I thought at first with the small beak like projection, it was a Calyptraeidae gastropod, however it lacks the cup-like structure.  The giveaway for Pododesmus is the hinge which a Google search confirmed LINK.  Campbell (1993) lists it only to genus.

Thanks Mike. I came up with my tentative I.D. after looking through Campbell.

Hope your doing well. Been meaning to message you, but been busy. I enjoyed hunting with you. Need to do it again sometime.

Thanks Chris. I too really enjoy finding and seeing the "odd ball" fossils.

I actually have seen one of these before at the LC mine, but unfortunately, it wasn't in my collection. :P  I viewed the Smithsonian LC II book (the mollusk volume) and the somewhat-dated Ward references on the VA/NC Pliocene, but nada.

  • 3 weeks later...

You just saved me from having to read a good deal and possibly post something as I slowly get through my que of things to catelog/ID from that site - thanks! :) I'd like to find one complete/both valves eventually - so far only seen a couple of single valves for them. Mission accepted!
