Really cool petrified wood

Please give me any info you can on this. This is the most beautiful piece of petrified wood I have ever found. Any idea on age or type of wood etc.?  Is the white outer covering volcanic ash?

Nice piece.

The outer layer of white is an oxidized skin of the material that replaced the wood (could be opal or agate).

If it is light for its size and feels "waxy" it is probably opalite.

In order to identify wood You have to look at the microscopic cell structures.

Great info! Most of the stuff I find is in North Central Nebraska in the heart of the sandhills area. The place I found this in, I would call a valley/drainage area covered in vegetation  heading  to a river. Pretty loose sand.
