With croc/gator scutes, the 'holes' (I'm sure there is a technical term I'm lacking here) are usually isolated, more obvious, deeper, and circular/oval in shape/. Also, since you nicely added a photo of the underside, you can see the characteristic flat, striated surface (at least I think I can) at the bottom of the piece. I've included two photo examples below, from historical TFF posts. Top photo: croc scutes.
